Another oddity came up at work the other day: the concept of the Judas Goat. I think I first came across the phrase in Terry Pratchett's Discworld book "Feet of Clay". An interesting concept: useful, yet repugnant, and fraught (yes, I said "frraught") with a lot of Western emotional baggage. Judas being, of course, probably the most widely-known traitor in this hemisphere. This brings up - in my mind at least - connections to Nikos Kazantzakis' book "The Last Temptation of Christ" or, more accurately, the film of the same name by Martin Scorsese. In this film, we get anothe picture of the Judas personality: an indispensable aid to the apotheosis of Jesus and, in fact, one of his closest (and truest) friends. So what's the real picture? More to come... ? |
